Letter, 1908, Jan 20, San Jose, California [to] Mr. Edwin Markham, New York City. / Henry Mead Bland. 1908.

Henry sends Edwin two of his publications, a Poem "A Song Of Autumn and The Pacific Short Story". He asks Edwin to use his name for the honorary membership in the Pacific Short Story Club. He has just recieved a letter from William Bulter Yeats accepting election. Mrs. Austin has been chosen also. He discusses their duties. He would like him to do a lecture and assures Edwin a great audience. He has seen Mrs. George and Miss Caltrea Vivian of the Normal School where is teaching. He is looking forward to hearing from Edwin.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
